Gluten Free French Toast

An easy recipe for gluten-free French Toast. This classic gluten-free breakfast recipe also has a dairy free option.

Gluten-Free French Toast

Making gluten-free Frech Toast only takes a few simple ingredients and a few minutes to make. My family loves this classic gluten-free breakfast recipe!

How To Make Gluten-Free French Toast

  • Whisk together the eggs, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, pure vanilla, and milk in a shallow dish such as a pie plate or casserole dish. (photo 1)
  • Melt the butter over medium heat in a skillet.
  • Dip the gluten-free bread in the egg mixture, flipping to make sure both sides get well coated. The longer you leave the bread in the egg mixture the more it will soak up the egg mixture and will take a little longer to cook. (photo 2)
  • Cook the soaked bread piece on medium heat until golden brown. (photo 3)
  • Flip to cook the other side of the bread until golden brown. Each slice should take 2-3 minutes to cook. Serve immediately. (photo 4)
  • To keep the French Toast warm while cooking the additional slices, place the cooked slices on a baking sheet and in the oven at 275°F.

Can You Cook Gluten-Free French Toast Ahead Of Time?

Yes, French Toast can be easily cooked ahead of time. Prepare the cooked French Toast for up to 30 minutes before serving and place the slices onto a baking sheet and hold in a 275ºF oven.

You can also prepare the French Toast batter a day ahead of time. Prepare the French Toast batter as directed and place it into an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Reheat the Ferch Toast in the microwave or in the oven at 400°F for 4 minutes flipping the toast over at 2 minutes.

Can You Freeze French Toast?

Gluten-Free Frech Toast is easy to freeze. The first step is to flash freeze the cooked slices. Place the cooked slices on a baking sheet and place them into the freezer until firmly frozen for about 30 minutes.

Store the flash-frozen slices in a freezer-safe plastic storage bag for up to 3 months.

Gluten-Free And Dairy-Free French Toast

I used unsweetened almond milk and Smart Balance butter for the dairy-free option. I also used a brand of gluten-free bread that is also dairy-free.

What Is The Best Gluten-Free Bread For French Toast?

For this recipe, I used Canyon Bakehouse gluten-free Country White bread. My family also likes both Schar and Aldis LiveGfree white gluten-free bread.

You can also use homemade gluten-free bread as well. I would recommend using day-old homemade gluten-free bread when making Frech toast.

I have two easy recipes for making homemade bread. One is baked in the oven and one is made in a bread machine.

Tips For Making The Best French Toast

  • If you have time, set the gluten-free bread out on a baking sheet on the countertop for at least 30 minutes to dry out the bread a little.
  • I like using an electric skillet to cook several pieces of French toast at one time.
  • Keep the slices of French Toast warm in the oven while cooking the additional pieces.
  • I like topping French Toast with powdered sugar and pure maple syrup.
